Browsing the supermarket for Oat-spiration is always a good shout, and whilst perusing the chocolate isle (my fave place) BAM! I saw it. The bright yellow packaging shone out like the signature yellow biking jersey itself, it was Green & Blacks up to their old tricks again a dark chocolate flavoured with lemon oil. perfection. From here my decision was simple, lemon & poppy seed muffins work, so heck add some dark chocolate and oats and it was a combination to die for and it's so super simple!
- 1 cup oats
- 2 cups milk
- 2 tbsp poppy seeds
- tsp lemon essence
- Green & Blacks dark chocolate lemon bar (however many pieces your heart desires
- couple tsp of caster sugar
- yellow food colouring
- chocolate icing pen (for decoration)
Method
You have your icing pen, your Green & blacks chocolate, Tour de France inspiration and most importantly, your imagination! So go crazy and make yourself the most handsome and delicious looking bowl of lemony oaty goodness that you deserve! Have fun with it!
Notes
I think as oats go, this is a proud moment for me. The flavour choice for each morning is normally discussed between my younger sister, my dad and myself, however as I was staying with my elder sister for this one, the whole process was totally up to me!
I was nervous that perhaps that she wouldn't like it, or that I would be hopeless without my Oat side-kicks , but the nerves were cast away as the creamy yet zesty oats hit my mouth giving me a more healthy breakfasty feel than many of our creations. It also had the intrigue of the poppy seed texture added to the equation which was quite a winner in my eyes! But of course the mature decadence of the dark chocolate and it's hints of lemon oil melted in really cut through to remind me that indeed chocolate IS an acceptable breakfast item that did not make me feel 'unhealthy' in any way!
I think if i were to make it again i'd use a different flavouring method because there was a slight hint of artifial-ness to it, I think even just adding some zest would have brought it up a notch! Also I'd be careful when deciding on your chocolate quantities as the rich flavour is risking overpowering that luscious lemon!
Bon Porridging!
- follow basic oats recipe (see earlier post)
- As those lovin' oats are just beginning to get intimate with the milk, add in the lemon essence, poppy seeds, sugar and yellow food colouring and keep stiring
- go on, have a cheeky taste, is it lemony enough? If not then HECK add some more essence!
- Once your oats are lookin' prime and are a 'just how you like them' consistency then serve 'em up in your fave bowl, cup, plate, plant pot or whatever you'd want to eat them out of.

Notes
- Get zesty! There is way more ways to make your oats lemony instead of essence for example using lemon curd, lemon oil or even lemon zest! But be sure not to add the curd when the mixture is hot otherwise you might have a nice eggy taste to deal with...
- It's versatile- That's right, it's not just exclusive to Le Tour De France, this porridge is delicious at any time of the year and compared with other perhaps more decadent flavours, this would be one to please a more health conscious palette! In fact part of the decision to go with this flavour was down to me catering to my sisters more 'health conscious' needs!
